Embarking on an internship

Embarking on an internship in a new country has opened my eyes to a world of contrasts and connections that have shaped my experience in South Africa. From the rich cultural diversity to unique communication styles, work environment, historical and political contexts, each aspect has contributed to my personal and professional growth. Join me as I share my observations and reflections on this incredible journey.

  1. Embracing Cultural Diversity: South Africa, particularly Cape Town, is a captivating blend of cultures, languages, and traditions. At SHAWCO, I have been fortunate to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, exposing me to new customs, languages, and ways of life. This immersive experience has deepened my understanding of multicultural dynamics and broadened my perspective on global communities.
  2. Nuances in Communication Styles: In South Africa, I have encountered a mosaic of languages, including Xhosa, Afrikaans, English, and Zulu. The richness of names, encompassing clan names, family names, and legal names, highlights the importance of personal identity. Communicating with South Africans has shown me their tendency to speak more literally, allowing for direct and straightforward conversations. Subtleties are appreciated but may be less common compared to my experiences in the United States.
  3. Embracing a Unique Work Environment: The work-life balance in South Africa is approached with a refreshing perspective. There is an emphasis on taking breaks and fostering social interactions during office hours. Building personal relationships is highly valued, and networking plays a significant role in professional interactions. Variations in office hierarchy, work pace, and decision-making processes have provided me with a broader perspective on work dynamics and collaboration.
  4. Historical and Political Context: South Africa’s history shares similarities with the United States in terms of oppression, segregation, and slavery. However, the apartheid era in South Africa was only abolished in 1994, making its aftereffects still apparent today. Engaging in political discussions is a common occurrence, with individuals from various walks of life, including Uber drivers and waiters, readily participating in lighthearted debates. This cultural enthusiasm for political discourse has given me valuable insights into the country’s democratic journey and its commitment to societal progress.

My Experience

My internship in South Africa has been a transformative experience, filled with contrasting cultural elements and meaningful connections. Immersed in a diverse environment, I have gained a deeper appreciation for cultural nuances, refined my communication skills, adapted to a unique work environment, and learned from the historical and political context of the country. This journey has broadened my horizons, fostering personal growth and igniting a passion for embracing differences and finding common ground across borders.

Sincerely, Chandra Scarcella
