Despite various challenges emanating from the pandemic and a tough financial landscape, we were able to achieve all the goals we set out for 2022. This year (2022), like many other societies, SHAWCO Health faced many challenges not only due to the Pandemic but also due to financial constraints. Despite these challenges, we could achieve the goals we had set out for the year. The achievements we are most proud of include the following:

Despite these challenges, we could achieve the goals we had set out for the year. The achievements we are most proud of include the following:

 

Between March - October 2022

Between March - October 2022, 78 Clinics were held, and over 850 patients cared for in the following communities: Imizamo Yethu; New Rest; Masiphumelele; Brown's Farm; Wynberg; Hout Bay; Kensington.

Marjorie McIntosh Mom & Baby Clinics

We launched the Marjorie McIntosh Mom & Baby Clinics, a collaborative effort by the Women's Health and Pediatrics teams.

Health Promo Zumba

Health Promo Zumba event - to promote the importance of physical health.

Instagram Mental Health Talk

Instagram Mental Health Talk with SWS - to raise awareness of mental health services available on campus

Two Internship Talks

Two Internship Talks - to help prepare health science students’ heading into the workplace.

Women's Health Run

Women's Health Run - to raise donations of pads during Women's Month.

Women's Health Run

Women's Health Talks - held during Women's Health month, where students could hear from women who have made incredible achievements in their fields.

Two Women's Health Skills Workshops

Two Women's Health Skills Workshops - held to prepare students for how best to care for patients at our Women's Health clinics and in their future careers.

Clinical Skills Workshop

Clinical Skills Workshop - to equip pre-clinical students with the skills they will need both in their careers and when at SHAWCO clinics to serve patients.

Paeds Run

Paeds Run - a promenade run in collaboration with Medicine in Motion to raise toy donations for Ikhayalethemba.

SHAWCO Education's Mentorship and Mental Health Project have been one of our most fulfilling projects. We worked with several schools, namely Bulumko High School and Itlanganiso Secondary (both based in Khayelitsha); Kensington High School and worked with Imkava Youth, an organisation aimed at serving and supporting young people based in Gugulethu.

The Sisterhood Unite initiative seeks to address social ills prevalent within society by supporting, empowering, and educating young girls to help them reach the highest version of themselves. The project is centred around womanhood in terms of envisioning young women taking autonomy and having confidence in themselves whilst instilling power in our young women of South Africa who reside in marginalised communities.
