Engaging Lessons and Remarkable Progress

Our digital literacy lessons with the learners have been a resounding success, and we are thrilled to witness their significant progress. Their level of engagement and understanding has been truly satisfying, reflecting their eagerness to learn and embrace new skills.

Overcoming Challenges: Loadshedding and Delays

Despite our best efforts, we encountered some obstacles during the sessions. Loadshedding, in particular, disrupted the flow of our lessons and impacted the learners’ experience. Additionally, there were instances of slight delays that affected our ability to cover all planned material. However, we remained resilient and adaptable, ensuring the learners received valuable instruction despite the challenges.

Addressing Resource Constraints

One major challenge was the lack of digital literacy books among the attending volunteers. This, coupled with load-shedding, made providing the necessary resources for effective learning difficult. To overcome this, we engaged in informal discussions with the learners, drawing from our experiences and offering guidance. We scheduled quizzes and Q&A sessions related to the covered content in subsequent sessions, fostering a fun and interactive learning environment.

Building Bonds and Gathering Feedback

Conversations with the learners proved invaluable in understanding their individual needs and the difficulties they faced in their schoolwork. These discussions allowed us to offer tailored advice and support, strengthening our bond with the learners. The positive impact of these interactions was evident in their improved attitudes, increased turnout, and enhanced engagement in subsequent sessions.

DL Holiday Programme and Future Plans

We are thrilled to announce that five volunteers, including Travis, will conduct sessions with primary school learners at the Kensington Community Centre from the 26th to the 30th of June. Seeing our dedicated volunteers stepping up during the holidays to give back to the community is heartening. The DL Holiday programme marks a significant milestone for SHAWCO, and we will utilise our hubs to provide a conducive learning environment.

Looking ahead, we are planning a debrief session with our volunteers before resuming the sessions in the next semester. We aim to be more proactive and have already drafted a rough curriculum schedule for Semester 2. As we are uncertain about Travis’s availability for the entire semester, our preparations will ensure a smooth handover to whoever takes over his role.

We remain committed to nurturing digital literacy and empowering learners with essential skills for the digital age. Together, we can bridge the digital divide and unlock a world of opportunities for the young minds we serve. Stay tuned for more updates on our journey as we continue positively impacting the lives of learners and communities we work with.
